Innovative Training Methods

A look at some of the newest ideas for training and education

New technologies continue to innovate training methods globally close to home, offering employers a range of options to teach their incoming employees. Some of these may seem far-fetched, and some are admittedly still in their infancy. However, considering these as supplemental options has proven useful to those who still employ a standardized training program to their business, such as in-house training on the shop or plant floor.

The following considerations include sci-fi sounding methods such as “microlearning” and “gamification” as well as those hot-button innovations like artificial intelligence and machine learning that are highly touted with each passing year, but still proven to meet much resistance with more traditional trainers when it comes to full-on adoption.

“Microlearning” involves delivering content in small, bite-sized modules. This approach capitalizes on the limited attention span of today's learners. Quick, focused lessons are more digestible and can be accessed on-the-go via smartphones or tablets.

If you ask around, especially in virtual fields, you’d think that artificial intelligence and machine learning are revolutionizing training and education. While we’ve covered these at length (and to much debate), the basic theory is that these technologies enable personalized learning experiences by analyzing learner behavior and adapting content accordingly. Chatbots and virtual assistants can also offer immediate help and support.

VR and AR have the potential to transform training by immersing learners in realistic scenarios. For example, medical students can practice surgeries in a virtual environment, and industrial employees can undergo safety training in simulated, hazardous situations.

A nascent concept known as “gamification” has also gained steam in recent years, having seen success in the educational arena. Gamification adds elements of competition and rewards to learning. Points, badges, and leaderboards motivate learners to complete courses and improve their performance. This approach fosters healthy competition and engagement.
