ABB acquires Siemens power electronics business
As part of an agreement between ABB and Siemens Gamesa, Gamesa Electric’s power electronics business will be acquired by ABB. This agreement marks a significant step for Gamesa Electric in its growth as a leader in manufacturing electronic components for the renewable energy market. The motors and generators business is not included in this transaction and will remain under Siemens Gamesa’s ownership.
The acquired business includes Gamesa Electric´s comprehensive portfolio of electrical products focused on energy conversion, such as doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind converters, industrial battery energy storage converters (BESS), and utility-scale solar inverters. The transaction, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions, is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025.
With this acquisition, ABB will also integrate the expertise of over 100 highly specialized engineers and two production plants located in Madrid and Valencia. In total, the operation includes the incorporation of approximately 400 employees, as well as key resources in the United States, India, China and Australia.
Juan Barandiaran, Managing Director at Gamesa Electric, highlighted the importance of this strategic move: “Our integration into ABB will foster the growth of the power electronics business, enhancing our capacity for innovation and competitiveness in the renewable energy market.”
