A look at the current tariff situation with Canada

With a constant stream of noise regarding tariffs on Canadian goods, here's a look at what mandates are currently in play on our northern neighbors, and vice-versa, as of March 13. Note that the current U.S. administration has suggested increases to some of these numbers which aren't yet official. All of the information below is subject to change.

  • U.S. Tariffs on Canadian Goods: The U.S. has imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian goods imported into the U.S. and a 10% tariff targeting energy exports from Canada, according to analyzify.com.

  • Canadian Tariffs on U.S. Goods: Effective March 4, 2025, Canada is imposing 25% tariffs on $30 billion in goods imported from the U.S., according to www.canada.ca

  • Canadian Customs Tariff: The current Canadian Customs Tariff files show various tariff treatments from countries with which Canada has tariff arrangements, according to cbsa-asfc.gc.ca

  • Potential Increase in Canadian Counter Tariffs: If U.S. tariffs are maintained, Canada may increase its counter tariffs to $155 billion, according to www.canada.ca.

Meanwhile, on March 7, multiple Canadian Ministers of Agriculture from various provinces reaffirmed their commitment in taking a united "Team Canada" approach to support the agriculture and agri-food sector in response to tariffs being levied by the United States, according to a press release from the Canadian government.
