Automaker's layoffs are less than expected, but fueled by truck recall
Automaker Stellantis announced job cuts at its Warren Truck Assembly Plant back in August with a high projection of around 2,400 workers. The official number released this week turned out to be less than half that, but the plant still laid off roughly 1,100 of its employees.
"With the introduction of the new Ram 1500, production of the Ram 1500 Classic at the Warren (Michigan) Truck Assembly Plant will come to an end later this year," the company said in a press release.
As a result, Stellantis announced that the plant will move from a two-shift to a one-shift operating pattern in general assembly. Other operations within the plant will remain on two shifts to support Jeep Wagoneer production. Â
The plant is located in the Detroit area. Stellantis, in addition to Ram, manufactures the brand names of Chrysler, Fiat, Jeep, and others.
