New Ideas from Coiltech

Companies like Bieglo and BAR plast showcased new insulation materials and more

June was fully occupied with exhibitions for wires, coils and EV-applications. One company that Electrical Apparatus spoke to at Coiltech was Bieglo, which sells high-temperature insulation solutions based on polymers.

One best-seller is the brand "Aurum," a thermoplastic polyimide that is used as insulation material for electronics and power-cables. In high-voltage magnet wires it can show all its superior performance: elasticity, high-temperature stability, great adhesion, slow aging in hot hydrocarbons and excellent dielectric properties.

Many companies still use enamel coating and want to switch to extrusion coating. The Stuttgart Battery-show, Coil-Winding (CWIEME in Berlin) and last but not least the Coiltech in Detroit, MI USA were great platforms for exchange of ideas. BAR plast, pictured below, is part of the Bieglo umbrella, and specializes in high performance polymers.

At both of these shows the sentiment was echoed that "the future of mobility is 800V and more" and the insulation for the engines and other metal parts that are exposed to high heat, where heat-dissipation or cooling is sometimes imperfect, especially in the proximity of welding spots.

The material known as PEEK (which stands for polyether ether ketone) is also becoming more and more widely used in magnet-wire insulation, too, and PEEK is starting to replace enamel coatings. Its performance is proven, and its usage in the fast-growing Chinese EV-market is not a coincidence, but rather based on its strong performance and relatively easy conversion in extrusion-coating.

Bieglo offers a large range of insulation products: granules, powders, solutions & dispersions, films, sheet, semifinished shapes for CNC-machining, finished parts made of high performance polymers.
